Future Coastlines Workshop, Cairns

18 October 2011 - 12:30PM to 5:00PM

Coastal communities in Queensland are already threatened by extreme events, whose impacts include extreme erosion of beaches and dunes, floods in low-lying settlements and infrastructure and damages to coastal ecosystems. In addition, future sea level rise and changes in cyclone patterns will be a challenge for fast-developing and low-lying coastal communities across the State. The Future Coastlines project has been funded by the Queensland Smart Futures Fund and focussed on Modelling of Extreme Events on Coastal Environments. By combining atmospheric, storm surge and extreme erosion models, the project has provided new results on the behaviour and impacts of storm surges for different Queensland locations, including simulations of the recent cyclone Yasi.
